1980 / In art, what matters is observation and the tools at your disposal.
1980
The 1980s represent a period of intense experimentation, both in his personal work and in collective projects, fueled by friendships and significant encounters.
In the early years of the decade, he met Pedro Riz à Porta, Luca Pancrazzi, Pier Paolo Pagano, Kate Freedberg, and Randi Malkin Steinberger. Collective projects such as Importé d’Italie and the Anello group (active from 1982 to 1986) became spaces for dialogue and experimentation, embodying the spirit of community and the creative energy of the time.
In 1983, he met Alighiero Boetti and worked alongside him on works on paper, with particular attention to the covers. The following year, in 1984, he began collaborating with Sol LeWitt as an assistant in the Wall Drawing project.
At the same time, he developed an increasing interest in the replicability of his works, which led him to an approach to lightness, evident both in concept and in materials: thin, light papers and essential strokes became distinctive marks of his style. Between 1982 and 1983, he also studied with a Japanese calligrapher in Milan.
The 1980s also marked the entry of new iconographic elements into his visual language. The first mountains began to appear in his works, foreshadowing a symbolism that would strengthen over time. In 1989, the magical squares emerged—enigmatic figures that intertwine art and conceptuality, becoming an essential element of his journey.
During this period, in addition to wall painting, he continued to work as a graphic designer, further expanding his creative alphabet.
